Today is the day before Thanksgiving. My wife and I are at the Milwaukee airport on our way to visit my parents. Maybe a month or so ago I tried and failed to rent a car. I was juggling discount codes and sessions were timing out on me and we had somewhere else to go or something else to do and I put it aside for later. Then I totally forgot about it. Oops.
Last night, I went to check my rental car reservation in my email, except there was no rental car reservation in my email. FUCK. I get assorted discounts through USAA but the best deal is usually Budget. Their website was down! I called and was able to speak to someone and get a reservation going for a grand total of $363 for “4 days” which is really 3 days + 3 hours but they get you for that fourth day as soon as the 24th hour of the 3rd day ends.
There was a slightly lower price available through Hotwire but I had visions of waiting in line at the one rental car counter where everyone had a Hotwire deal and it taking forever, and this is Thanksgiving so no way in hell was I going to chance that. I’m a Budget Fastbreak member so I can skip the line and go out to the little kiosk in the parking garage. That alone was worth going through them instead of Hotwire.
So yeah. The prices weren’t this high back when I originally should’ve made the reservation! At least there’s a car available which I’m sure Budget is glad to rent me at the last-minute “poor you forgot to rent your Thanksgiving car rental until now” rate.
Happy turkey day!

I’m hiring a car on New Years Day, how terrible will it be?

Just checked Hertz at MKE, $207 Thurs-Sun all in for a midsize, $283 luxury with the USAA discount.
EDIT: misread, sounds like you are leaving MKE - try the USAA discount at Hertz for your destination. Hertz usually cheaper on weekends/holidays than Budget, and USAA code gives you best rate plus free extra drivers.

I rented a car for a New Year’s roadtrip (let’s see, do I take the Miata with mediocre top seals (LOUD on the freeway) and summer tires, to NEW HAMPSHIRE, or do I take the Golf TDI with no heat at all, or do I rent?), and got a Dart. I did reserve it a couple weeks in advance, though, and ended up paying like $120 for four days.
It was OK, I guess.

I like MKE, nice airport. When I lived in Madtown, I used to drive out there to fly home to ATL when MSN was too expensive.
Happy Food Day to you as well, hope things work more smoothly from here on out.

I checked all the USAA discounts. Budget was the lowest. I flew into Baltimore. I could’ve saved 40 bucks on Hotwire and actually none of the rental counters were all that busy. Oh well.

I love in Madison. If I can get a direct flight out of Madison I’ll take it, but otherwise I’d rather fly Southwest direct out of Milwaukee than connect out of Madison. Plus Milwaukee has this sign after you get past security.
All in all, travel went perfectly other than paying too much for the car.

Probably fine if you book in advance.
